The purpose of this article was the elaboration of the major concepts of stress and depressive symptoms, and their mediators, social support and selfefficacy. In particular, an attempt was made to address the nature and significance of stress, depressive symptoms, social support, and selfefficacy with an indepth review of the conceptual and operational analyses on these major concepts in the context of aging. This study intended to add knowledge to theory, research, and practice in the field of gerontological nursing to better understand elderly persons´ health and wellbeing.
